The Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club has been a long-term fixture in the community, servicing the Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff communities since 1947. The Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club, together with Jackson Clements Burrows Architect tasked Lyons Construction to replace the existing building with a two-storey facility. Lyons Construction was awarded the project in April 2020 and completed the project in May 2021.
The striking triangular-shaped building has an impressive facade, with extensive timber cladding spanning the entire exterior, drawing inspiration from its coastal surrounds. The timber cladding will naturally wear over time to compliment the Moonah trees surrounding the building.
The ground floor features a kiosk, club administration, amenities, LERT & IRB storage, board storage and a junior lounge. The second storey (accessible by either lift or stairs) boasts an impressive multi-purpose room, bar and commercial kitchen, meeting room and large deck.
The building benefits from expansive floor to ceiling glass doors, providing the functionality of cross-ventilation but the stunning expansive views of the Point Lonsdale coastline to enjoy on balmy summer evenings.
A large public lawn with terraced decking provides a welcoming civic interface with Ocean Rd and the connecting surf beach, supporting food trucks and community events during peak season. Externally, on the ground floor is another large decking area and a lush lawn, perfect for sandy feet straight from the surf.
The overall design successfully resolves complex fire separation and bushfire rating requirements.
The project was delivered within 1.5% of the contract value, proving the success of the thorough value management process, the commitment and quality of the entire design team. We were also thrilled to successfully provide a 90% local procurement rate for contractors and subcontractors.
