Building Careers Geelong; Educating Tomorrow’s Trades

Last week, Thursday 11 May, we had the pleasure of hosting over 100 staff and students as part of the Building Careers Geelong immersive site tour. Here, students toured both a commercial and residential site to get a taste of life as a trades person, and within the construction industry in Geelong.

Building Careers Geelong is a partnership between GRLLEN, The Gordon TAFE and supported by the Master Builders Association of Victoria. This immersive program includes hands-on demonstrations (thanks to Caruso Bricklaying), presentations from industry professionals and many opportunities for students to ask questions. Along with a tour of our Clifton Springs Primary School site, students visited one of Hamlan Homes’ residential sites with opportunities to enquire about apprenticeships and discuss work experience placements for Structured Workplace Learning (SWL).

Here is a review from one of the attending schools:

“Thank you so much for giving our students this opportunity. It was a fantastic day and I think given how last minute some of the schools were to come on board, it ran very well! Our students were absolutely thrilled about the fantastic prizes and wonderful show bags that were provided.

The students were so engaged and interested, it was wonderful to see. The various speakers on the day were terrific too.

Thank you again. Well done to everyone involved.”

At Lyons, we were so thrilled to see so many eager and inquisitive students interested in trades, with many having a desired trade already lined up. We are really passionate and educating young Australian’s about opportunities in Construction, both on site and in the office.

The next event is in September, so make sure you’ve booked your place on the bus!
