LYONS A ROARING SUCCESS

Celebrating 90 years of building excellence

A PROUD third-generation local business is toasting 90 years of building excellence. Lyons Construction Geelong’s oldest and largest commercial construction company, is marking the milestone with a cocktail party tonight. Chairman, Norm Lyons said the occasion salutes almost a century of building distinction, which all began when his father, Eric James Lyons, and uncle, Allan Lyons, built their first house near Echuca in 1929.

“The event is an opportunity to thank and pay tribute to all of the individuals who have contributed to our success over the years,” Norm said. The first house, “Built by Lyons”, in Geelong, was 1 Sommers Street, Belmont. The house sits proudly on the hill today and is a testament to Eric’s insistence on quality workmanship. Eric’s legacy is as solid as the 100s of houses he and his team built over the decades to come. “Dad’s work ethic, his honesty and integrity, and his strong family values, continues to inspire us both professionally and personally, today”, son Kevin explains. Building is an integral part of the family history with Eric’s two sons Kevin and Norm having completed their apprenticeships with the business. They then continued to work alongside each other for the next 50 years.

Kevin retired as a director in 2016 and his daughter Christine is a current director and human resources manager. Meanwhile, Norm’s son Steve is a director and commercial manager. Managing director Gary Iacono, said Lyons Construction prides itself on developing solid relationships with clients, many of whom have trusted the company to complete multiple projects over the years. “Construction is a team effort. It requires dedication, hard work and collaboration towards delivering a quality outcome,” he said. “We are fortunate to have a skilled, reliable and dedicated team of staff, subcontractors and suppliers who all work together to achieve excellence in building.”

Lyons Construction is extremely proud of the many community buildings; schools, medical facilities, libraries, children’s centres and other educational facilities as these provide a tremendous benefit to the whole community. Lyons Construction supports locals in other ways, too. The company, and its employees, has a long association with local charities, including Give Where You Live. “Eric believed in giving back to his community,” Norm said. “He would be proud of where the company is today and the impact we continue to have in our region after all these years.” The industry leader has also collected many awards over the years including overall winner of the Geelong Business Excellence Awards, and last year won Master Builder of Victoria – Commercial Builder of the Year (South West Region).
