In 1929, at not quite 20 years of age, Eric James Lyons was out of work after the builder he had been working for became insolvent. With a younger brother, Allan, also needing to finish his apprenticeship, the hunt was on to find work wherever it could be found.
Not long after, Eric, had a lucky break. He was contracted to build a “Closer Settlement” house in Patho West near Echuca. So, packing all of their tools, their swags and a small tent into Eric’s converted 1924 Dodge Ute, Eric and Allan headed off on what would become an adventure of a lifetime.
After building the Patho West house, Eric and Allan, moved on to building one room school houses in the Heytesbury District. It is amazing what a couple of young “men” achieved at such at time of hardship for many and what is even more incredible is that many of the buildings they built at that time, including the first house, are still in use today.
And thus, through hard work and determination the E. J. Lyons, building company was born. A fitting start for a company that 90 years later continues to build a vibrant, strong and successful community through its construction of schools, integrated children centre’s, community buildings and recreational facilities.
Eric James Lyons, led by example all his life. He possessed a strong work ethic, expected the highest quality workmanship, and truly lived the values of honesty, fairness and integrity.
As we pause to reflect on the Company’s many achievements over its 90 year history we honour our founder, Eric J. Lyons, Master Builder.
