Our history

E.J.Lyons, Builder, was born out of necessity when in 1929 Eric Lyons found himself out of work when his bosses’ business became insolvent due to the Great Depression.

Seeking opportunities wherever they may be found Eric, and his younger brother Allan, set off around the state in a converted 1924 Dodge Ute. Staying away from home for weeks on end and barely making enough to live on they travelled from Patho West near Echuca to Timboon and Terang in the Heytesbury District.

By the early 1930’s the economy had started to recover and there was more work closer to home. During this period Eric and his team built upwards of 200 houses in and around Belmont, many of which are still standing today.

On 21 October 1933, Eric married Eliza May Wallace and settled down to married life at 2 Oxford St, Belmont in a house designed and built by Eric. Eric and Isie had four children, Doreen, Kevin, Norman and Heather.

In due course Kevin and Norm both completed their carpentry and joinery apprenticeships and joined the business. In 1973 the business became known as E.J.Lyons and Sons Pty Ltd. and the transition from residential to commercial building gathered momentum.

From humble beginnings the business would adapt, build and grow into the proud company that exists nearly nine decades later.

Over that time Lyons Construction have operated with one objective, to add value to Geelong and our local community, by building and enhance the built environment, providing training and job opportunities and supporting local trades people and suppliers.

Our culture has been shaped by the fact that we are a family run construction company whose founder was known for professionalism, integrity and quality workmanship. These values and the people who work for Lyons Construction still shape our mission and our company today.
